Christian Dunbar - Project 3 - InDesign

For project 3, I designed a portfolio consisting of a front and back cover, 2 furniture pieces, 2 interior spaces, a light, and a biography page. I titled the 8-page piece "Natureworks: Opulence through Natural Elements." I designed each page to be 8.5" x 11" (horizontal), using a 3 x 3 grid. In keeping with the "clean" theme of Projects 1 and 2, I used a white background with gray and black text, placed either directly on the background, or on top of a gray band. I set up 3 paragraph style groups: NATUREWORKS styles, FURNITURE, AND MATERIALS. NATUREWORKS consisted of 4 styles: Title - Title page, Signature - Title page, Title - Bio, and Contact. FURNITURE consisted of 4 styles: Title - Piece, Materials, Dimensions, and Price. INTERIORS consisted of Title - Interior, Interior Highlights, and Materials. Fonts used were Optima for titles and Myriad Pro for body, in regular, italic, bold, and condensed.

The front cover (Page 1) consists of 6 images of natural materials, placed in a 2 x 3 grid, shifted to the center of the page. The top and bottom margins equal the remaining 1/3, divided in half. The title was placed in the top 1/6, and was aligned on the sides with the images, and a signature was centered in the bottom 1/6.

Pages 2 and 3 contain furniture. The left page shows a detail view of a Bubinga bench, and the right shows a detail view of a Poplar coffee table. The primary images have been placed and cropped so as to fill the outer 2/3's of their respective pages. Next, in the remaining 1/3 sections of each page, a gray vertical band was created, which spanned full-bleed from top to bottom, with a thin white margin on its sides, which reflects the layout of the Context board of Project 2. The bottom third of the gray band contains a complete product image, while the top 2/3's contain product specs and price.

Pages 4 and 5 contain interiors. The left page contains three images of the Felser residence, and the right page contains five images of GLOW nightclub. The primary images have been placed in the upper 2/3's of their respective pages. The left-page image is full-bleed from left to right, and the right-page image fills the upper, right 4/9's of the grid. On the left page, I have created a gray band with thin upper and lower white margins. Two secondary images fill the left 2/3's, while text fills the right 1/3. On the right page, I have created a continuous band that spans from the top left 1/9th of the page, to the bottom right 1/9th. In this case, four secondary images fill the upper and right arm of the band, while text fills the corner section. In terms of the overall spread, the primary images above are aligned, the secondary images below are aligned, and the two text boxes are reflective of one another.

Pages 6 and 7 contain a lamp and a biography page. The left page shows a pendant lamp. The left column contains a full-length image, the center column contains text, and the right column contains detail photos. The columns are all equal 1/3's. The center column consists of a white background, and the right column consists of a gray band behind the images. The right page contains biographical information. The left column is divided into a work section, a publications section, an educational section, and published images section. The remainder of the page consists of a published biographical article, cropped and full-bleed so as to fill exactly the center and right column. This spread, like the previous spread, uses a gray band to run up the central portion between the two pages.

The back cover (Page 8) is deliberately clean and uncluttered. A logo has been designed and placed to fill the center 1/9th of the page. Along the bottom edge, text containing contact informative has been placed in one clean line.
